Title
Roman copper alloy horse and rider brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy horse and rider brooch. The brooch is complete apart from missing its hinged pin. The brooch is in the profile form of a horse going left, with a male rider on its back. The horse has a long snout which is upturned just before the nostrils. The eye is shown by a large circle, and the mane is shown by ribbing and depicted flowing as if the horse was galloping. At the very top of the mane is a large pointed oval ear. The front leg is vertical and there are bevels on the perimeter of it depicting the knee and the hoof. The rear leg is angled inwards beneath the body, again shown in a life like motion of galloping. The perimeter of the rear leg also shows the knee and hoof. The stump of the tail is present, however the rest of it is missing. The body of the horse is decorated with four recessed cells, each containing green enamel. There is one long 'S' shaped cell running the length of the body, with three smaller oval cells at the shoulders and neck. The rider sits on the back of the horse however the only details shown are on the face. The riders body is decorated with three sub-oval cells, ecah containing orange enamel. The riders face is very life like, with a pointed nose and circle for the eye. His hair is depicted by ribbing in the same was as the horses mane, and also flows backwards to show that the horse is in motion. On the reverse of the hind of the horse are two integral lugs for the hinged pin. On the rear of the shoulders is a broken catchplate.
