Title |
Roman copper alloy hinged strap fitting, possibly from 'lorica segmentata' armour |
||
Description |
English: Roman copper alloy hinged strap fitting, possibly from 'lorica segmentata' armour. The object consists of a sub-rectangular plate which tapers towards one end and curves back to almost meet the main plate, creating a loop which would have been the central loop of a three-loop hinge, the other two loops being on another plate. A single rivet remains in situ. The wide end may have been broken off.
The fitting is in fair condition with a dark brown patina, green around the rivet. It is 21mm long, 11mm wide, 1mm thick at the plate and 4mm thick at the loop, and weighs 1.4g. The object is similar to that illustrated in Bishop and Coulston, p99, fig. 56, no. 18. |
