Title
Roman copper allo key finger ring
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy finger ring of Guiraud's type 5 ('ring-key'), probably dating to c. AD 200-410. The hoop is D-shaoed in plan, with a flatened and slightly projecting rectangular bezel, of equal width to the hoop. The hoop is plano-convex in cross section and unelaborated. From one corner of the bezel and perpendicular to the hoop projects a sub-circular-sectioned hollow shank with an extremely simple sub-triangular bit projecting from its inside edge near to its base.

Dimensions: Across hoop 19.9mm; width of hoop 4.3mm; thickness of hoop 2.0mm; length of key 14.8mm; diameter of shank 4.4mm; width of key including bit 7.1mm; weight 3.77g.

Although with more elaborate bits, similar 'ring-key's are published by Crummy (1983: 84, nos. 2164-2165, 2169), excavated in late Roman contexts at Colchester. No. 2195 (ibid: 85), a gilt copper alloy lock plate from a small casket from a grave dating to the fourth century held a 'ring-key' in situ. A further comparable finger rings excavated in Exeter are published by Holbrook & Bidwell (1991: 254, no. 87-88), the former dated to the 4th century, the latter, and more comparable, unfortunately undated. Such finger rings are classified by Guiraud as Type 5.
