Title |
Roman copper-alloy finger ring of Henig type II/III, with niccolo intaglio |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy finger ring of Henig type III dating to the Roman period, c. 43-410 AD. The ring itself would originally have been broadly oval in plan, with its shoulders expanding to form a long and broad bezel, though the majority of these as well as the lower half of the hoop have broken away in old damage. At the midpoint of the bezel is a two-tone oval glass setting imitating nicolo, which has sloping sides and stands proud of the latter. The upper surface of the setting is decorated with the engraved design of a standing male figure walking left, holding an uncertain object in each hand. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 21.16mm wide, 1.41mm thick at the midpoint of the shoulders and 4.91mm thick where the setting joins the ring bezel. The setting itself measures 11.85mm long by 8.97mm wide. The whole object weighs 4.08g. For a similar ring recorded on the PAS database, see record HAMP-539DB3. |
