Title |
Roman copper-alloy dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: An early Roman enamelled copper-alloy dragonesque brooch. The brooch is a reversed S-shaped plate; both terminals are missing. The centre of the plate is broad and is crossed by a panel of three orange enamelled lozenges; on either side there is curvilinear decoration outlined by reserve metal ridges within which blue enamel survives. The remaining fields contain a reddish stain but it is unclear whether red enamel once filled these areas. An incomplete bar of copper alloy extends slightly from the base of the neck at one end and would have joined to the head. The back fo the 'body' is slightly dished, with a small knob in the centre. This feature occurs on other brooches and is thought to have tensioned the pin. |
