Title
Roman coin hoard
Description
English: CURATOR'S REPORT

A hoard of 103 Roman silver denarii and associated pottery fragments thought to be deposited c.134 AD or soon after.

Circumstances of discovery

The hoard and the associated pottery was scattered in an area of seven meters on cultivated land at a depth of 3" with a depth of 5" for the main cluster.

Latest coin in the hoard is of Hadrian, and the sole example of this late obverse group of AD 132/4-8. The theme of Fortunae Reduci - is presumed to hope for the return of the emperor to Italy for the final time (AD 134) from his campaign against the second Jewish revolt. (See P. Strack, Die Reichspraegung zur Zeit des Hadrian, no. 240 and page 134)

Pottery associated with the hoard by Richard Hobbs Seven pieces of coarseware pottery, very abraded. All but one of the pieces are undiagnostic, the final is part of the base of a jar or bowl. The fabric is very gritty, grey with dull orange core. It is not certain that the fragments come from the original hoard container, but this seems possible as the dating is consistent with the coins. Date: the fragments can be dated to the 2nd century.

Note: Scans of nos. 13 and 81 at BM.
