Title
2012 T847 Roman silver coins
Description
English: Five of the coins are silver Roman coins of the denomination known as the denarius (pl. denarii). The latest coin is of Diva Faustina I which could have been produced up to the end of the reign of Antoninus Pius in AD 161 (the same date as the latest coins in the 2011 find) and the earliest Roman Imperial coin is a fragment of a coin of Nero.

One of the coins is a Roman quinarius, probably of Roman Republican date but so worn as not to be identifiable.

Summary:

Republic (uncertain issue) 1 (quinarius)

Nero (AD 54-68) 1

Nerva (AD 96-98) 1

Trajan (AD 98-117) 1

Hadrian (AD 117-38) 1

Antoninus Pius (AD 138-61)

Diva Faustina I 1

Total 6 coins

Metal Content and Age

The coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to their age and metal content. They are certainly more than 300 years old and have a precious metal content far in excess of the 10% threshold.

Same find?

Roman Republican coins circulated for a long period in Britain due to their high silver content and the composition of the group is as expected for a deposit of mid first century AD date. The coins are within the date range of the 2011 find and should be considered as addenda to it.

Recommendation

On the balance of probabilities, I conclude that this find constitutes a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996), by being a group of two or more precious metal coins of the same find.
