Verona, Augustan Bridge (medieval restorations on right) Plate xLiii ROMAN CITIES 259 and which curiously supplement each other:Verona having had her outer shell destroyed,while in Pola it is the outer row of arcades thatremains intact while the interior was gutted.Outside of Italy the only amphitheaters that arethe rivals of these two in monumental grandeur,are those of Nimes and Aries in France, Tarra-gona in Spain, and Thysdrus in Africa. It iscurious that in none of these cases is there anvrecord of the date of their construction, so thatwe are left entirely to conjecture and stylistic in-dications. At Verona we miss the change of order withwhich we are familiar at Rome. The Doric isused consistently in all three stories of arcades. Of the outer circuit of seventy-two arcadesonly four are standing to show the rhythm of thethree stories and the outside finish. It is thoughtthat when the walls of Gallienus were hurriedlyconstructed in 265 a.d. in prevision of the north-ern invasion
