Perhaps thisgate commemorated the change, as was so oftenthe case. The architectural fragments unearthed werenearly all left on the ground, and have been de-stroyed by the neighboring villagers or used asbuilding material. One discovery of extremeinterest was certainly made. It is that of a me-morial gate to the Emperor Trajan, erected tohim in 113 by his praetorian prefect, or militarycommander of the province, P. Atilius Aebu-tianus, and dedicated, with a banquet, by LaeliusProculus, for the city. It is evident at first sight that the gateway ismuch later than the walls, which are constructedof immense blocks of stone, somewhat bossedand rusticated. The wall was broken in order toinsert the gate, which was made to project some-what on the left, and to recede on the right side,in rather awkward fashion.
