Historically we can best studyhere not only the type of funerary chapel and 324 ROMAN CITIES the origin of the basilical interior, but also thatpeculiar style of decorative sculpture in flat re-lief or openwork in marble which forms thebasis of Byzantine and early Italian design, es-pecially the geometric work which prevailedthroughout Dalmatia, Istria and nearly thewhole of Italy even under the Lombards. Infact the palace is one of the indispensable land-marks of history; the latest produced by Romanimperial art.
