Turin, Porta Palatina, City Gate of Augusta Taurinorum (age of Augustus) Plate XXXVI ROMAN CITIES 211 It is not easy to remember that Turin, mostmodern and modern-looking of large Italiancities, owes its aspect to its faithfulness to Ro-man antiquity; and that under the present streetsin the core of the town, at a level of betweenonly one and two meters under the pavement,the sewers and pavements, the house-walls, andeven the cellars of the city of Augustus are sowell preserved that they prove just how closelythe lines of the old Roman streets have been fol-lowed. In fact, the city kept within its ancientlimits and was surrounded by its Augustan brickwalls with its colossal gateways until the suddenexpansion of the seventeenth century led to theirdestruction. Before then, in 1536, the Frenchhad destroyed the west gate, or Porta Marmorea,probably the principal entrance to the Romancity, as well as the amphitheater which was notfar beyond it, in the usual relation to the citywalls.
