Title |
Roman brooch (possibly) (front, profile, reverse) |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy object, which is possibly the handle of a tankard from an Iron Age or Roman periods. The object is 49.9mm long, 16.6mm wide, and, at the widest point approximately at its centre, it is 2.9mm thick. The object has a mass of 8.5g. In plan, the object has two convex sides, with two narrow ends, one of which flares out slightly and is narrower than the other. The object is narrow sectioned and convex in profile, thickening towards the narrower terminal. On the convex face of the object there is a raised border on the curved edges and at the wider end.
The object has a light green surface. Material has been chipped from both ends and sides, leaving a darker green pitted surface. The finder has reported that the object was found within approximately 20 square yards of Roman objects (e.g. see brooch reference WMID-A2B135 and steelyard weight reference WMID-A2E254), although there were also some other objects of less certain date within the same area (e.g. see object reference WMID-A29465). |
