Title
Roman brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy trumpet derivative brooch, dating to c. AD 80-175. The brooch is a hinged trumpet variant, very similar to Mackreth TR 4.2, no. 5594. It is formed of two fragments, broken at the central disc: one fragment comprises the crest of the bow and the head, while the other consists of the 'fantail' foot.

The head has short (6 mm) tubular wings which act as an integral double lug hinge mechanism through which an axis bar remains. Only the stub of the pin survives. The head narrows into the bow, which terminates in a break at a central disc. This central disc may have originally held enamelling, or possibly a rivet (Mackreth, 2011(1): 127). Both the head and the triangular 'fantail' foot are decorated with celtic-style relief ornament. The decoration on the foot comprises three sub-circular cells, arranged in a trefoil enclosed by a scrolling raised line. The remains of a catchplate and rib are visible on the reverse of the foot, although they are incomplete.
