Roman brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy developed Headstud brooch (c. AD 75-200, Mackreth HS 2c, no.7136). The wings are rectangular, and D-shaped in section, extending 8.5 mm either side of the, enclosing the hinge mechanism and spring. A stub of the pin remains. The wings are decorated with an incised vertical line 2 mm from the edge. At the apex of the bow, just under the head, emerges an integrally cast circular headstud terminating in an old break. On the crest of the bow is an oval boss with an incised central recession.

The bow is decorated with a row of lozenge shaped cells running the full length, with triangular cells at each side The edges of the bow are decorated with triangular notches creating a serrated effect. The bow has a shallow D cross section, and is 8 mm wide tapering to 4.6 mm. The discoidal foot projects forward. There are the remains of a catchplate on the reverse. Plouviez period O. 

Overall length 41.1 mm, width 22.7 mm, thickness 3 mm. Weight 11.2 g.
