Title |
Roman brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete, copper alloy Roman brooch dating to AD 50-75 (Plouviez period H). Aesica type with hinged pin.
The head of the brooch comprises enclosed undecorated wings and a hinge attachment. The pin is missing. The bow flares out from the head to a single pendant boss on each side before narrowing to the top of the foot. The bow has a prominent central ridge leading to a pseudo-hook on the head. On either side of the central ridge is a fluted decorative motif. There are two grooves down the foot, flaring outwards at the bottom, forming an upside-down 'V' shape. A thin raised collar runs along the bottom of the foot. On the back of the brooch is a broken catchplate. This type of brooch has a known area of distribution in the East Midlands and Norfolk. Ref: Mackreth, 2011(1): p.47, no. 4a; 2011(2): pl.29, no. 6109. |
