Title
Roman brooch; knee
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman knee brooch, dating from 100 - 200AD. The bow is fluted, having two raised ridges separated by a wide, shallow groove of U-section and is short, broad across the shoulder and narrows rapidly to a semi-circular foot. There is a single narrow, transverse groove between the bow and the short wings. The underside of the bow is hollowed out, as are the wings to make space for a ferrous pin bar. A small amount of pin bar remains in the ends of the wings, but the pin and most of the catch plate are missing. The brooch has a dark brown patina. It is 32.2mm long, 16.5mm wide and 13.6mm thick. It weighs 6.47gm. Reference: Hattat, Visual catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figure 194, number 479.
