Title
Roman anthropomorphic steelyard weight (probably)
Description
English: An incomplete lead-filled cast copper-alloy artefact - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The artefact is anthropomorphic, specifically cast in the form of a female head. As implied the bronze was cast hollow and filled with lead, the latter corroded to an off-white colour. The base is open and oval in form, slightly pointed. Along with the lead are traces of orange corrosion product around the centre of the base and part of the circumference. This, along with an internal stub, hints at an iron loop. There is further iron staining on the outer surface of the head, on the hair, uppermost. The head itself is worn and corroded, and with no obvious attributes. It is possible that it is a generic female head with swept hair, deriving ultimately from a gorgon. The hair is defined by incisions. The hair, face and neck are defined by moulding, as is the worn nose. The eyes are engraved, with untreated areas - the pupils. The mouth is a short laterally incised line. Around half of the head has been lost with a fracture around a seemingly defined band of hair. As well as the back of the head and any possible suspension loop, part of the hair has been lost on the top right of the head (when facing).
