Title |
Roman anthropomorphic steelyard weight |
||
Description |
English: An anthropomorphic steelyard weight, made of lead and dating to the Roman period. The weight takes the form of a female head, and though some of the facial detail has been lost, the general profile remains clear. The weight is modelled on an extended spheroid shape, and measures 31.6mm high, with a central diameter of 18.9mm. It weighs 26g.
Roman weights in the form of human heads are known, though there are few on the PAS database. There is a possible example from Surrey (SUR-AE04F3), though this may not be a steelyard weight, and one from Paulerspury, Northants (NARC-8D6343), but this is not a close parallel. This weight might relate to a Goddess, such as Minerva, but this is speculation, as the iconography is not clear. |
