Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Roman amphitheatre, Calleva Atrebatum Probably the most impressive part of the remains of Roman Silchester, the amphitheatre which stands outside the walled town was built in about 50AD. It is romantic to imagine great gladiatorial contests taking place here but there is no direct evidence for this and most of the bones found were of horses. In the 12th century there was an hall built here which may have been Castellum De Silva, captured by King Stephen in 1147.
