Title
Roman Wirrall brooch (front, reverse, profile)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy Wirral brooch. Roman period (c. 1st-2nd C AD). Length: 48.4mm, width: 9.7mm, depth: 17.1mm, mass: 11.6g. The front of the head is stepped and decorated with horizontal grooves. On the back of the head there is a horizontal ridge housing the iron axial rod, with a central vertical slot for the pin. The pin is missing, but the slot is filled with corroded iron, suggesting that the pin may also have been made of iron. There is an integral loop on the head. The bow is arched in profile. There is a central stud on the front of the bow. Above this stud the bow is square in cross-section. Below the stud, the bow is sub-triangular in cross-section. There are two wavy lines decorating the front of the bow above the stud, set within reserved fields (with no evidence of any enamelling, which is a more common feature of Wirrall brooches). There is a catchplate on the reverse of the lower portion of the bow, with a largely complete pin-rest. The moulded foot resembles a forward curving scroll. The brooch has a well developed green patina with traces of a white metal coating visible, particularly on the head and catchplate. In the PAS “North Regional Newsletter”, Winter 2007, McIntosh comments that, “…it is thought that they could perhaps have originated from the Wirral with only a couple of work-shops making them.”
