Title |
Roman Toilet Spoon (Probably) |
||
Description |
English: A possible cast copper alloy toilet spoon which may be of Roman date. The bowl of the spoon is flat and oval (18.5mm long by 9.79mm wide by 1.3mm thick) with a slight forward bend. The shaft is 19.83mm in length with a rectangular cross section and there is a hint of a collar at the bowl end. The stem widens towards the end, where there is a broken suspension loop which is turned through ninety degrees. The bowl is decorated with two incised concentric circles with a central circular depression. Around the edge of the bowl there are traces of a encircling band of incised dots. The object has a slightly uneven mid-brown patina and there is some damage around the edges. The presence of a suspension loop suggests that the spoon may have come from a toilet set (chateleine). However, the bowl seems too large to have served as an ear scoop and it is possible that the object may have served another purpose, for example a pendant.
