Title
Roman Steelyard Weight
Description
English: Lead Steelyard Weight with stub of iron suspension loop. Cast conical or bell shaped weight with a dimple in the middle of its flat base, and either an incised V or a more extensive but indistinct set of radial lines. Patinated overall. This object was furnished with means of suspension, but its flat base would also permit it to be used with balancing scales. The mass may suggest that, for this latter use, a weight of one quarter libra (roughly equivalent to the averdepois pound) was intended. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400.

Diameter: 30.1mm, Height: 28.5mm, Weight: 118.75gms.
