Title |
Roman Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse, profile) |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy Polden Hill brooch of Roman date, circa (AD 80-120).
The foot of the brooch, catch plate, rearward facing hook, pin, spring and axis bar are all missing. The brooch is 'T' shaped in plan with semi-cylindrical wings. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. The bow is broad and tapers slightly to a damaged terminal, therefore the foot of the brooch is missing. At the rear of the head of the brooch is a rectangular shaped recess that would have held the coiled spring and pin which are both now missing. The end caps are incomplete. There does not appear to be any decoration on this brooch, however the original surface has been lost and there is a well-developed green coloured patina across all surfaces. There are many similar examples on the database that have been found across the West Midlands, one example was discovered in Bidford on Avon, Warwickshire (WAW-E3B44C) and (WMID-3A00DE) discovered in Staffordshire. Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches is concentrated in the West Midlands. Similar brooches are illustrated by Bayley and Butcher (2004:p.88-89). The brooch measures 16.35mm in length, 19.77mm width (across damaged wings), 5.53mm thick at the point where the bow begins to taper, and weighs 3.8 grams.
