Roman Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy Polden Hill brooch. Roman period, c. AD 75-175. Mass: 7.3g; width: 23.2mm; depth: 11.6mm. T-shaped in profile with an arched bow. There are pierced end caps on the cross-bar holding a copper-alloy axial rod which secures the (incomplete) spring. A hook or lug on the head holds the remains of the external chord. The bow has a rectangular cross section. The front of the cross-bar and the bow are decorated with vertical grooves.Traces of a white metal coating remain on the surface of the brooch. The bow is broken at the bottom.
