Title |
Roman Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse). |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy brooch, probably hinged Polden Hill type. Mass: 11.5g, length: 31.2mm, width: 24.0mm, depth: 13.0mm. Roman period (AD75-175). The brooch has a cross-bar consisting of two side-wings. The terminals of each wing have raised collars which highlight the end caps. The surface is very corroded but the reverse of the side wings appears to be sealed with a transverse slot behind the head, suggesting that the brooch was hinged rather than sprung (although the pin is missing). The head and transverse bow have a humped, comma shaped profile. The bow has a D-shaped cross-section (with a flatter reverse). The brooch is broken at the foot. There appears to be a raised median rib running down the front of the head and bow. The brooch has a corroded brown and green surface. In her “Brooch Timeline”, Worrell (2007) dates Polden Hill brooches to AD75-AD175. |
