Title
Roman Needle
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy needle of Roman date. It is complete but has been bent almost at right angles approximately mid-way along its length. The head is flattened, rectangular in form and with a central rectangular eye. On both faces there is an incised groove that extends above and below the eye. The shaft of the needle is oval shaped in section, tapering to a rounded section at the tip, which retains its sharp point. All the surfaces of the object have a dark orange/brown patina that is pitted and worn in places. It measures 103.80mm in current (bent) length, 3.94mm in width and 1.91mm in thickness at head, 2.76mm in diameter at shaft, and weighs 4.43g.

This needle is of Roman date and finds parallels with excavated examples from Colchester (Crummy, 1983: nos. 1991, 1993). These are classed as Type 3 needles by Crummy and were recovered from 3rd-4th century AD contexts, suggesting a possible similar date for the current example.
