Description
English: Fragment of a probably Roman copper alloy penannular neck ring: a flat rectangular sectioned bar curving and widening from a (recent) break to a simple straight terminal. After a short plain length from the break engraved edge-to-edge decoration consists of a saltire flanked by straight lines, then a series of zig-zags and finally four straight lines before the terminal. That one face was left undecorated suggests that it was not to be seen, and that the object lay flat with the ornamented face outwards. Such an arrangement shows that this cannot have been a bracelet. Little more than one fifth is extant. Cf. an example from Barton Bendish, Norfolk (NMS-1C7B25). External diameter c.115mm. Width 5 - 8mm. Thickness 1.3mm. Mid 1st - 4th century.
