Title
Roman Miliarensis of Magnus Maximus
Description
English: A fragment from a copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date (c. 4th century AD). The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. In profile it forms a shallow curve. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example has broken at the edge of a small field which is roughly square and bears a punched ring-and-dot motif. A slight constriction and a transverse linear incision divide this from a longer, rectangular field. This latter begins and ends with a transverse groove. Between are two longitudinal ridges formed as a result of three lines of circular punches. The ridges feature a line of ring-and-dots in low relief. Such a bracelet would have probably been fastened by a hook-and-eye clasp. Beyond the rectangular field is a constriction, before a field with incurved sides; perhaps the beginnings of the eye end, the terminal having broken off. This field bears a lozenge moulded in low relief. The artefact is corroded with a mid-green patina.
