Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Portrait of a boy. Acquired in 1894. Marble of Carrara. H. 33 cm. Around 100 AD. The simple boy’s hairstyle was customarily used since the child portrait of Nero and well into the 2nd cent. AD. Even if the face seems to be expressing grief, this type of psychologising runs utterly counter the ancient conception of portraiture. The sculptor may have worked from a death mask moulded in the wax from the deceased child’s face. The original effect of the portrait would have been quite different to its present statedue to the added colour : the eyes in particular were once painted with pupils and eyelashes that would have given life and energy to the portrait. Français : Portrait d'un garçon. Acquis en 1894. Marbre de Carrare. H. 33 cm. Vers 100 après JC. Altes Museum, Berlin.
