DescriptionRoman Farmhouse at Fornea - modern Belmonte - Apr 2011.jpg | These are the remains of a Roman farmhouse built in the 2nd century AD. A large home with over 40 rooms, including extensive indoor plumbing, baths, hot tub and steam room, the home was likely the residence of the owner of a Roman 'latifundia' or large tract of land that farmed by locals and slaves to provide food to Rome. Roman records show that Lusitania Province (which is roughly equal to modern Portugal) was a major supplier of olive oil and wine as well as fodder for animals. The farmhouse appears to have been abandoned in the late 4th century, most likely as Rome recalled garisons of troops to defend against attacks from Germania. | ||
