Title
Roman Dragonesque brooch
Description
English: Fragment of copper alloy and enamel Roman Dragonesque plate brooch. It consists of either the head or the foot and measures 17.4x10.8mm and weighs 1.47g.

The fragment is decorated with a roughly central ring-and-dot. Traces of blue enamel reside in the 'dot'. The area around (the 'ring') is empty but would once have contained enamel. Extending from one side, an arm narrows and curves back on itself, to touch the fragment beside the ring-and-dot. The end of this arm is rounded and contains traces of a dark coloured enamel, probably blue.

To the other side of the ring-and-dot the fragment widens into a circular shape. At the centre is a raised rib, curving in profile, and with a triangular notch cut away at the centre on both sides. The area on either side of the rib aappears to have traces of blue enamel.

Between the latter two decorations on one edge is a broken extension, which would have linked the head or foot to the rest of the body.

Dragonesque brooches date from the second half of the first century to the second century and are thought to be a British invention, probably being made in the north as this is where they proliferate.
