Title |
Roman Dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of an elaborate dragonesque brooch dating to the early or mid Roman period. The fragment comprises the body and foot of the brooch. The body is D shaped and hollow in section. The upper surface of the body is divided into three with panels of cells which would originally have contained enamel. The inner most panel is rectangular and contains three diamond shaped cells and eight small triangular cells. This panel is flanked by cells containing trumpet motifs. The body extends to a foot which is damaged. The foot is stamped with a ring and dot motif. It also possesses a small semi-circular catchplate(?) on its upper surface, an unusual feature on a dragonesque brooch. The brooch measures 38mm in length and has a maximum width of 24mm. It has a thickness of 4mm. |
