Title
Roman Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper alloy and enamelled Dragonesque brooch of Roman, second century date (AD 75– AD 175).

The fragment is part of a debased dragon’s head and represents either the head or the foot of the complete brooch. At the front, two concentric circular fields forming an eye, contain enamel. The centre of the eye is coloured blue and the outer part is pale red. Adjacent to the eye there is part of another field containing red enamel. Part of the neck, convex at the front and flat at the rear, projects outwards and has an old break. The rear face is entirely flat and plain.

This fragment is in poor condition and has bronze disease. All the breaks are old.

14.0 x 11.3 x 3.6mm. Weight: 1.40g.

Compare with a complete brooch illustrated in Hattatt 1989, ‘Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts’, 351, fig. 210, ref: 155.
