Title |
Roman Dragonesque Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Dragonesque plate brooch. In the centre of the s-shaped plate and widest part of the plate is a circular boss with a cross in the centre. The field around the boss is divided into four S-shaped sections, the inner ones of which have blue enamel and the outer ones have red enamel. Only the head terminal survives, the foot terminal is missing. The head is decorated with a raised lozenge section at the top that is hollow behind. Next to this is a semi-circular field with two smaller semi-circles inside and blue enamel around the edge. This could be the upstanding ear of the animal. Below this is a circular section with a central pellet and poss9ibly blue enamel around the edge. The head is joined to the main body and all of the pin mechanism is missing. The surviving length is 40.3mm, the width is 23.0mm, the thickness is 4.8mm and the weight is 10.12g. |
