Title |
Roman Colchester derivative (hinged) BOW BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative hinged type. Complete except for most of pin and damaged catchplate; bow bent. Hinge bar is copper alloy and there are traces of white metal on the front surfaces of wings and bow. Four-rib and groove mouldings on each wing. The bow is D-shaped; the top part has a centre rib and angled grooves and the lower two thirds has transverse ribbing, ending in a slightly larger rib as foot knob. The catchplate has no sign of piercing. Width 27mm, length (as bent) 40mm. Various combinations of these elements are common in central and east Suffolk - the upper bow at Hacheston (HCH 001, pubn no. 129), Westhorpe, Charsfield (CHA 011) and a Stoke Ash eg with fantail foot - but all of these have incised line wing decoration and either the fantail or no data on the lower bow. One (poorly recorded) fragement from Wenhaston (WMH 005 Catchpole B15) has similar wing decoration to the present example. |
