Title
Roman Coin Hoard: Vespasian-Domitian
Description
English: A coin hoard of 198 Roman silver denarii and 13 fragmentary denarii. 162 denarii and 11 fragments were initially recovered by the finders. A small scale excavation of the hoard findspot conducted by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service and the Finds Liaison Officer produced a further 7 coins in the immediate vicinity of the hoard, but there was no evidence for further features or potential vessels the hoard might have been buried within. Any features that may have been contemporary with the hoard itself were removed during the initial excavation of the hoard prior to PAS/SCC involvement. An additional 28 coins and 3 fragments were recovered by the finders in the two days following the excavation bringing the total to 198 coins and 13 fragments (211 objects in total). The hoard appears to have been relatively well contained within a small area of the field and had clearly been deposited within a confined area of the field. The coins themselves have been found within a radius of several metres from the hoard spot, probably as a result of agricultural activity. The coins constitute a well-defined group ranging from the Roman Republic period through to Domitian. The latest coin so far identified amongst the group is a denarius of Domitian dated to 81-83 AD. This suggests the hoard was probably deposited in the ground in the early 80s AD. Preliminary examination of the group suggests the Republican coins may extend back into the 2nd century BC, giving a date range of c.150 BC to 83 AD. The composition of the hoard is as follows: Republican/Augustus: 96 denarii, including 23 denarii of Mark Antony with obverse of a galley and reverse of Legionary eagle between two standards that are possibly related to Roman military activity. Numerous moneyers are identifiable alongside coins of Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Octavian. Augustus: 19 Tiberius: 18 Agrippina Senior: 1 Claudius: 1 Nero: 6 Civil Wars: 1 Galba: 1 Otho: 1 Vitellius: 11 Vespasian: 34 Titus: 3 Domitian: 6 Fragments: 13 including coins of Vespasian, Mark Antony and Domitian The size of the hoard, its date range and the composition in terms of periods/rulers represented finds a close parallel with a hoard found in 1979 in Mildenhall, Suffolk, which had as its latest issue a denarius of Titus dated to 79 AD (see Robertson, 2000: 17, no. 86).
