Description |
English: A bronze follis of Constantine II (RIC VII Londinium 296), from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Rutlandshire, sold separately and as Map 27 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The illustration is a reengraving of Figure 19 in Tabula II Nummi Romani from William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I, p. 98.
Obverse: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB [intending CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, Constantinus Iunior Nobilissimus Caesar, the Most Noble Prince Constantine the Younger] Reverse: PROVIDENTIAE CAES [intending PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, Providentiae Caesarum, Of the Foresight of the Princes] and P LON [Pecunia Londinium, Money Minted at London] Camden's note states "19. Constantinus Junior, son of Constantine the Great, (to whose share Britain fell among other countries) stamped this coin while his father was living. For he is only styled Nobilis Caesar, a name that was wont to be given to the heirs apparent of the empire. We may gather, from the building, and PROVIDENTIAE CAES. that he and his brother built some public work; and from P. LON. that it was coined at London." Notes: London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724. Français : Sujet : Monnaies
