Title
Roman Coin: Denarius of Septimius Severus
Description
English: A probable contemporary copy of a silver denarius of Severus Alexander dating to the period AD 228 to 231 (Reece period 11). VIRTVS AVG reverse type depicting Virtus standing left holding Victory and resting hand on shield; spear against his left hand. As Mint of Rome. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 87, no. 220.

Many of the third century denarii in this assemblage appear to have a high copper alloy content. It is not immediately evident whether these are contemporary copies or just very base-silver official issues.
