Description
English: Copper alloy

Brooch. Cast Brooch fragment, possibly the upper part of a bow and fantail variety of Colchester Derivative brooch (cf. Mackreth 2011 plate 59 nos 2863 and 12154), if not, possibly a headstud brooch without stud. The fragment comprises tubular wings clenched to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin (lost), and decorated on their front with a vertical groove, surmounted by the stub of a loop; and with a rectangular section tapering bow with a central trough or gutter below it. The rest of the bow is lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, probably 100-175.

Length: 23.3mm, Width: 16.3mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 5.2mm, Weight: 3.62gms.
