Title |
Roman British plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Roman plate brooch (c. AD 75-300, Plouviez Period W).
The 'umbonate' brooch has a shallow domed bossed centre, and is decorated with a radiating concentric pattern of enamelled cells. The dome is surrounded by a groove and there is an incomplete loop above the hinged pin (now missing). There is a small oval projection over the lower part of the catchplate, and a similar projection on the left side of the dome (when the brooch is held with the hinge at the top), which would originally have been mirrored on the opposite side (now bent backwards). The decoration consists of narrow rows of triangular cells with the points facing inwards towards the central boss, and the enamel has survived in sufficient detail to establish an alternating red and blue design. Length: 31.66mm, width: 24.56mm, weight: 5.51g. Mackreth, 2011(1): p. 164, no. 6a; 2011(2): p. 111, pl. 108, no. 11577.
