Roman Aesica brooch (front, reverse)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy back-plate from an Aesica brooch. Roman period, c.AD50-75. The back-plate is fantailed, with two side-lobes. It consists of a flat plate with a ridge across the bottom of the front, a catchplate with a complete pin rest on the reverse, and the stub of the bow which is riveted to the plate. Mass: 14.3g; length: 41.6mm; width: 28.8mm; depth 12.0mm (excluding the portion of the bow which is riveted to the backplate).
