Title
Roman : Knee Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy knee brooch of Roman date. The brooch has a flat semi-circular head plate from the reverse of which a lug projects holding an axis bar and seven turns of the spring. The pin no longer remains. From the centre of the straight edge of the head plate the bow projects out at a near 90 degree angle, swelling slightly and bending back downward again. The bow tapers toward a circular foot knop from the reverse of which a worn catchplate projects. The brooch appears undecorated.

The metal has a dark brownish-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 43.7mm long, 21.9mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 13.1g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.334, fig.193 and are dated to the 2nd century AD.
