Title
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 175. While all elements of the brooch are present it is in three pieces; the main body, a separated terminal; the pin.

The main body of the brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped piece, one terminal has separated by an old worn break. The remaining integral terminal is a smaller s-shaped "dragon head" terminal. The body of the brooch is decorated with a raised central boss within a recessed circumferential groove. This is flanked by fan-shaped recesses. The terminal has a large annulet "eye" in the centre and a recessed pellet to one end represents a nostril. The reverse is flat and undecorated. It is 42.7mm long, 25.4mm wide, 6.9mm thick.

The terminal which has become separated is a mirror of the first. It is 15.9mm long, 19.3mm wide, 3.9mm thick.

The pin has a circular section and has been bent out of shape. It is 36.9mm long, 2.8mm in diameter.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn though patches of silvering remain. The brooch weighs 16.9g.

Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210 and are dated to the 2nd century AD.
