Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 75 - AD 175).

Only the central section of the brooch has survived, with the head, foot and pin all missing. The body of the brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped panel. The upper surface is domed and decorated with an incised, diagonal line that separates the panel into two. Each side of the panel has a triangular shaped recess that follows the curve of the brooch and would have been filled with enamel. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal is very worn and mid-green in colour. The brooch is 20.0 mm long, 9.6 mm wide and 3.3 mm thick. It weighs 2.0 g.
