Title
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date. The brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped piece, one terminal of which has been lost to an old worn break, the other is a smaller s-shaped "dragon head" terminal. The body of the brooch is decorated with three fairly large recessed rectangular cells flanked by two triangular recessed cells each of which would once have been in filled with enamel. Faint traces of blue and yellow enamel are retained within one of the rectangular cells. The remaining terminal has a large annulet "eye" in the centre, a recessed pellet to one end representing a nostril and an ovate indentation to denote an ear at the opposite end. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The brooch is 51.5mm long, 26.5mm wide, 3.1mm thick and weighs 12.2g.

Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210 and are dated to the 2nd century AD.
