Title
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Dragonesque brooch of Roman date. Only the mid-section of the brooch remians which is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped panel. The pin mechanism and cathcplate are missing due to old breaks. The surface has an integral raised decoration consisting of a two curvilinear, longitudinally running lines with four lines running across the width of the brooch. This raised decoration creates five cells within which are alternate colours of yellow and red enamel of which fragments survive. The reverse of the object is smooth and undecorated.

The metal has a mid brown-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 23.02mm long, 9.05mm wide, 2.34mm thick and weighs 1.57g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210 no.608 and are dated to the 2nd Century AD.
