Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date. Less than half of the brooch remains and is sub-triangular in plan with a sharp curve towards the rounded point. The upper surface of the brooch is decorated with scroll or wave type designs with some surviving red enamel within recessed areas. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a light brownish-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 18.2mm long, 16.1mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 4.4g.

Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210 and are dated to the 2nd century AD.
