Title |
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Roman date. The brooch is curvilinear in form resulting in a roughly S-shaped piece which is decorated with a central rectangular panel with three lozenge shaped cells within which traces of yellow enamel remain. The resulting triangular cells between these two elements will also have been filled with enamel though this no longer remains. The panels to either side of the rectangular element are decorated with two recessed elongated triangular cells which curve along with the line of the brooch. One of these cells retains its blue glass enamel while the other three are empty. To one end of the brooch the S-curve continues into a "head" feature which is itself curvilinear and broken while the other end of the brooch terminates in a worn break. The reverse is concave and undecorated. The metal has a mid greyish-brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 30mm long, 18.9mm wide, 2.7mm thick and weighs 4.6g. |
