Title
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Roman date. The brooch is of the dragonesque type dating to the 2nd century AD.

The brooch is curvilinear forming a roughly S-shaped piece with an oval "head" at one end and a worn break at the other. The body of the brooch bears faint traces of decoration though the degree of wear has rendered it indiscernible. The surviving head has a central ring and dot design representing an eye.
The reverse of the brooch is undecorated and the pin no longer remains though a patch of iron corrosion around one "neck" suggests the positioning of the pin.
The metal is a light brownish-green colour and is worn. The brooch is 48mm long, 26.9mm wide, 4.7mm thick and weighs 15.9g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210.
