Title |
Roman : Bracelet |
||
Description |
English: A fragment from a glass bracelet of snake-thread type. The bracelet would have been circular and has a sub-triangular section. The main body of the bracelet is formed from a light greyish-blue glass. At the apex of the triangle there is a groove. This element of the bracelet would have been made first. In this groove there is a thin strip of mid greyish-blue glass, which has been pulled into a thread and twisted before being placed into the groove. In order for this to be achieved the original bracelet element would have had to have been kept at a temperature that would have allowed the second piece to be added without causing the glass to scatter. It is for this reason that these bracelets were considered high status.
Only two bracelets of this type are known to have survived in Europe. Both are housed at the Yorkshire Museum, York. Andrew Morrison, Curator of Archaeology, Yorkshire Museum pers. comm. |
